I'm not sure whether you know this about me, but my most unfavourite thing of quilting, besides basting, and the actual quilting part, is making the backing. I know, I know, why do I quilt? That is a very good question.
Anyway, this will probably be one of the few blogs where you will see a ta dah moment and blog post about a quilt back. For me it's easy to finish a quilt front, not so much, a quilt back. By the time I've finished piecing the front my mind is off and wandering thinking about the next 85 quilts I could be making, not thinking at all about how I'm going to piece the back.
Because I don't love piecing backs it takes metwice five times as long as it does to make the front. For this back I used some of the left over HST's from the quilt front.
This week the sum total of my sewingfrenzy slog, is this quilt back.
I didn't have a holder upperer to hold it for me for the photo shoot so had to hang it on the shutters, so not a particularly great photo.
I'm really happy with it, but that's all I've achieved this week. I'm hoping that Friday will be my day of accomplishment, and I'll have something more to show next week.
I forgot to show you last week that a minor miracle happened at Chez Sunshine and I've started handquilting the hexie mini quilt ( it was going to be a pillow) that has been on hold for months.
Worked On This Week
HST quilt backing
Hexagon mini quilt - started hand quilting (technically not this week, but I missed showing it last week)
Waiting Patiently For Me To Show Interest
Mystery Quilt
Floral Bouquet Quilt
McFlurry - backing
Circle Game BOM
Material Obsession BOM
Monochromatic Challenge
Starflowers
Weeks Statistics
Worked On - 1
Ignored - 7
Congratulations to Lee for a year of WIP Wednesday's. I only joined in a few short months ago but it really has helped me to focus (occasionally) on my WIP's and at least try to make some progress on some of them. Pop on over to Lee's to see the wonderful creativity that has been happening this week.

what does the hst stand for? it is a lovely quilt, I may need the pattern details for this one? the back is lovely too.
ReplyDeleteIt all looks great. I love Hometown fabric, it is definitely up there on my list of favorites. I love your pieced back. I don't usually do a pieced back either - I like to just get it done by the time I'm at that phase and would much rather do a plain back. You've done a really beautiful job on this though! Way to go.
ReplyDeleteI really like this quilt - didn't recognise the fabric but if it's Hometown, is it the Sweetwater one?, no wonder I like it, their designs are brill. Love the colourway.
ReplyDeleteFor somebody who doesn't like piecing backs that is a seriously awesome backing! I really like that a lot!
ReplyDeleteI agree, that back is awesome! I have been wondering lately if I should start the back when I start the front, or if I should just make two fronts for each quilt. I don't hate the backs at all but they seem to take forever to get done, which holds up the rest of the quilt.
ReplyDeleteHa, i have quilts waiting patiently and i have quilts growing old and grey.... Love the back - good job!
ReplyDeleteHey, it's not about quantity but quality! And what quality! Those hexies were what inspired me, weeks ago, to do some of my own!!! And who said the back of a quilt has to be pieced! Of the 30 quilts I've made, maybe 5 have pieced backs!! The HSTs are fab!
ReplyDeleteI think your pieced backing looks great!

That quilt back is really nice -- and so is the front. What a beautiful quilt! If that quilt needs a home, let me know.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on Friday ..
I'm pretty lazy about making nice backs too. I'd rather just sew a couple of big hunks of fabric together and get onto the next quilt. I'm better than I used to be, but still not my fav part either.
ReplyDeleteI just finished a quilt with HSTs and Hometown too :)
I'm proud of you for participating and finishing things you probably don't want to! :)
ReplyDeletecongrats on making it through piecing the back - my least favorite part of quilt making is joining the ends of the binding strip together. My quilts usually get held up because I'm putting of binding because of that one little step :)
ReplyDeleteYour hand stitches are beautiful!
I love pieced backs but they can be quite tedious to assemble--sometimes it seems they take as long as the front! Yours looks wonderful. Congrats on starting the hand quilting too on your hexies.
ReplyDeleteThe backing looks fantastic! I love it as much as the front! I know what you mean about not loving making the backs which is why i like using the vintage sheets on the backs of mine. I think it really finishes the quilt off beautifully with a pieced back though!
ReplyDeletex
I LOVE your half trianle quilt!! And the backing is fantastic!! I think that what you've done is quite enough for 1 week.Very pretty hexis!
ReplyDeleteMy problem is that I get too carried away with the backs, then they both have competing quilting needs which just doesn't work. You should just use yardage for your backs - there are so many stunning patterns that really need a big canvas to be appreciated - so why not take advantage of that. Then all you have to do is maybe sew a few lines to get a back big enough and run with it. Why piece 'em if you don't like it? Gotta enjoy the journey! Love this one BTW, the colours are so modern. Looking forward to seeing it quilted.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the backing - its always a pain. I have a habit of measuring wrong and making them too short and only noticing once I've basted.
ReplyDeleteLove what you have done though, it will look fab.
I love the back to your quilt and your hand quilting! Great job this week (and last)!
ReplyDeleteWow your quilt and quilt back is beautiful! All of your parts that you dislike, I dislike as well! LOL
ReplyDeleteMarg! I love you cos you sound just like me! I don't like doing the backs or the basting either though I love doing the quilt fronts - I have to try and get over that lol.
ReplyDeleteYou've done a fab job of the back though - it looks great :0)
I love this quilt - you've made a beautiful job of the the front AND the back. Gorgeous colours!
ReplyDeleteFor someone who isn't crazy about backing... yours is really incredible!! Great looking quilt coming together there!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on getting the backing done, it looks great. I have to make myself finish the back too. I agree, tt's more fun to move on to the next project!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is looking great! and I love the hand quilting!
ReplyDeletewow! That is one amazing quilt back! I agree - they are harder & take longer!
ReplyDeleteThe pillow is looking very pretty and whoooooo ho for that finish on the back.
ReplyDeleteI keep telling you we need to make our backs before the fronts ...I run out of puff once I get to the back as well!
Oh my gosh, I love your Hometown quilt!! I love how you're piecing the back so far, too!
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about?!? It's the perfect back! I think I might have mentioned more than once how much I like your Hometown quilt :)
ReplyDeletelove this fabric, the backing is beautiful - such a great quilt!
ReplyDeleteLoving the HST quilt. Good for you to push through the yucky bits. :)
ReplyDeleteNo wonder you love that quilt back - it`s simply gorgeous!!! I love piecing to and my least favorite element of quilting is basting and the actual quilting, unless it`s hand quilting which I love.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on starting hand quilting your hexies. What a terrific start!
ReplyDeleteThat back is looking great, and love the look of those wee hexies
ReplyDeleteI have never pieced together a back. I use sheets, which I have learned really is a no no.
ReplyDeleteI don't really like piecing backs either. All that work to piece, and its on the back! My backs tend to be solid.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you pieced the back. That quilt is going to be amazing.
ReplyDeleteI hate piecing backs, too - my brain feels like it's all this work for something that nobody's going to see most of the time anyway, so why not just use a cotton sheet?
ReplyDeleteThat said, I love other people's pieced backs - and this one is lovely!
Wow, love the gray and red color combination! It's stunning. Great design for the back as well. Thanks for linking up to WIP Wednesday. : )
ReplyDeleteHand quilted hexies are just love. They make me happy everytime!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea you came up with for the back! I have only recently started doing anything with the back, so bravo for getting out there and doing something new!
ReplyDeletei love the fabric you used
