Time for FTF again and linking to Shay at Quilting In My Pyjamas.
This week it's something that has made my life easier, unfortunately not a teenager who has decided that it's ok to do housework. Now that would be a favourite of the century.
No, it's a Sewline Fabric Glue Pen.
I use it instead of hand basting my fabric on to my hexies. It's sooooo much quicker and easier. I run the glue stick along the fabric, fold it over and press onto the template and that's it. I use reusable card templates, as opposed to home made paper templates. I'm not sure whether it would work so well on paper as it would probably tear when you try to remove the template after sewing the hexies together. You can buy refills for the pen and they last quite a long time, I can't tell you how long as I'm still using the first one!
I use Sue Daly's English Paper Piecing Shapes from here.
I glue the fabric onto the shape, hand sew the shapes together, so there's still lots of relaxing hand sewing, just none of the basting beforehand, Then I take out the paper piece once it's surrounded by other pieces and use it again, and probably again.
It's great for any shape English paper piecing.

OMG I've never seen one of those before. Off to online shop right away!
ReplyDeleteWow thats great I can see why it is a favourite, some one handy thought of that! :-)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely something I need to go searching for - I can never resist a new notion.
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to try this. I really don't like the basting part of EPP so maybe this would help. Also, I am catching up on blog reading, your French Roses quilt is wonderful, I just love it!
ReplyDeleteThat glue is fabulous, isn't it? I love your hexies. I've only recently started making hexies and am having a lot of fun just cutting and glueing....I've not joined ANY yet! lol
ReplyDeleteIncredible! I don't know that I would have the patience. :-)
ReplyDeleteI've been a bit of a snob about glue and fabric but I used a sewline glue pen last weekend at quilt camp and boy was it easy and very friendly to use! I'm a convert!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the sharing! I was wondering what type of glue pen you used! I think i"ll be ordering from Sue Daley! And your hexagon pillow is beautiful! I think I need to make one of those too!
ReplyDeleteYou convinced me and I'm glad you did . This little gadget is fantastic. Takes all the pain out of making hexies.
ReplyDeleteI agree - Fantastic favourite!
That sounds really handy! Love those star flowers!
ReplyDeleteI love the sewline glue pen too. They're absolutely fantastic and a much more fun way of English Paper Piecing.
ReplyDeleteI haven't got into the little hexies yet but with Summer coming I won't be doing any crochet when I'm watching TV at night and hexies may be the next thing to give a go. Glad you've shown me that pen, all that basting is for the birds!!
ReplyDeleteCheers
Helen
Looks like a great idea. I'll need to see if I can hunt one up on line. Love your FTF. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWonderful, now I will have to add that to my gotta have it list. Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all of the above and have to get one...I have a hexie quilt 3/4 done and the basting does put me off. Great FTF!
ReplyDeleteAll your flowers are beautiful.
Looks like a great tool - still something of an EPP novice and have surprised myself at how much I enjoy it, even the basting bit....love your starry blocks.
ReplyDeleteI love those glue pens! Also, if you live in a hot climate (like I do) it's a good idea to keep them in the fridge until you use it. It's much easier to use it sparingly and to remove the paper later on.
ReplyDeleteOh I just found a tutorial on facebook where they were using that pen..look like a smart gadget...most likely unavailable on my side of the world :-(
ReplyDeleteHey, how did I somehow miss this post?! Such a useful one at that! Hexies are one of the next things on my to do list and given my dislike of handsewing I'm thinking they may be just the shortcut I need to reduce the pain a bit... Where do you get yours from? And do you think it would be also suitable for ticker tape quilts or would that go through it too fast?
