Last week I flew down to Canberra to meet up with my friend J. Dodging thunderstorms as we flew out of Brisbane. I stayed the night in Canberra, then we drove to Sydney for a girls weekend, except that it wasn't a weekend, it was a Thursday, and Friday night!

This was our view from our hotel.

Of course, we had to have cocktails.   A Pear Martini.

Calamari for lunch.

A snapshot taken at The Rocks.

The weather in Sydney was good most of the time.
A trip to Manly

Frozen yoghurt inhaled. Love this stuff, we first had it in Hawaii last year.

Lunch at Hugo's Manly…fabulous food and fabulous view.
Crab and avocado salad

Pate, quince jelly, cornichons and pickled carrot.
Couldn't miss out on a Margarita for me, and a Cosmo for Julie

The weather was pretty good while we were there, we managed to miss out on the worst of the Sydney weather. We had one storm on the Friday night that was very spectacular. We were able to sit on the chairs in our room and watch the lightning display.  We had been sitting out on the balcony at first but it got a bit wild so scurried inside before we were struck by lightning.

Then I spent a few days in Canberra, not so many photos though as it was cold, and not quite as photogenic as Sydney.

A chai latte to ward off the cold

I have had an Instagram account since Instagram started, but failed to see the goodness in it, so never bothered with it until I went away earlier this year.  I can not believe I didn't start using it sooner.  This is part of the reason I'm so quiet on this blog, also loading photos is driving me crazy on here, it seems to take forever, and I spend more time trying to fix the photos than I do writing the post. If you'd like to see what I'm doing on a more regular basis, you can find me at
mj_inparadise on Instagram.

  1. I'm reading this post while I'm in Sydney. It's such a beautiful city. I especially like the views of the cocktails. :) Its great seeing you have fun! I keep wondering about Instagram...

  2. Yum! You are making me hungry- that crab and avocado looks delicious! What a spectacular view of the storm clouds! Now you need to show us your latest finish and your newest block.....

  3. Two very different cities but still very enjoyable. It looks like you made the most of your visits and had a great time.

  4. Looks like the perfect weekend away!

  5. Thanks for the lovely trip down memory lane. A long time ago I called Sydney home for a few years and it still feels a bit like home, although a lot has changed in the meantime. So far I haven't seen the need for Instagram, but maybe I should get signed up too. Maybe one day ;)!

  6. IG is addictive. And your photos make me jealous. Have you tried using Picmonkey to resize your photos so they don't take so long to load? I do all my photos there first, save them to my computer and they load up way faster than they used to.

  7. Nice to hear what you've been up to lately. I have joined Instagram but don't really get it. Will try to find you there.

  8. Looks like you had a great time.

  9. I still haven't caught the Instagram bug either. Or Facebook or Twitter, for that matter. Oops.
Sounds like you had a great trip, and boy all the food looks awesome (I'm with Suz, the crab and ago looks amazing). As for Canberra - after 5 yrs there it still stuns me how cold it stays there. Didn't it get the memo that summer's here in a few days?

  10. Oooh, ooh, I know where you were staying there! When we were in Sydney a few years ago we stayed not far from there, and we ate at that same place in Manly too! We also, funnily enough, got a huge storm one night lol

  11. Your food and cocktail shots make me want to hop on a plane and get myself to Sydney!

    Not doing Instagram...

  12. Looks like you all had a blast! And as we slip into winter here, I am envious of your summer weather.

  13. Looks fabtastic, but I loved Sydney when we visited. I could live there, but only in one of those nice housesclinging to the coast, thank you very much!
Will follow you on IG now I know!

  14. Looks beautiful and I love a good thunderstorm ..

  15. I love Instagram - so much easier!!!!! Gorgeous photos, Marg - you know I always love travel and food pictures :)
We'll be traveling over Christmas break and I promise to return the favor (and take lots of pics).
