Favourite Things Friday

It's Friday again and that means  it's time for FTF, hosted by the wonderful Shay of Quilting In My Pyjamas .  This week my favourite thing is going to the supermarket or local fruit and vegetable store and being able to buy the fruit and vegetables I have on my shopping list.

I didn't realise it was a favourite until today when I couldn't do it! It's something I have always taken for granted. When I do my grocery shopping I automatically assume that most things on my list will be sitting waiting for me to choose them and take them home.

Unfortunately the supply of fresh fruit and vegetables is going to be a little erratic and slow at the moment due to the floods.   Today when I went to the supermarket they had avocadoes, bananas (we live in Queensland they always have those, lol) pumpkin (squash), cucumbers, mushrooms, celery, some iceberg lettuce, oranges, lemons, a few grapes and that was about it.  No potatoes, onions, capsicum (red pepper), tomatoes, spinach, apples, or just about anything else you can think of. I was lucky they had some produce, apparently one of the larger supermarkets in the tourist area had no fruit and vegetables at all!

Fortunately we also have a couple of local fruit and vegetable shops in the area who are supplied by local producers,  and they had a much better range. A big thank you to the local fruit and vegetable growers who through a lot of hard work supply us with our produce. Oh and a thank you to the locals who didn't panic buy at the slightest rumour that we may have a shortage of supply for the next few weeks.

Hop on over to QIMP, follow the link at the beginning of the post and find out what everyone else has as a favourite this week.

  1. This was on my mind as I came to your blog. Lynette Anderson just tweeted that her local shops had no fruit or veg and she has a bday bbq on Sunday! We are blessed with the choices we usually have. I watched the 7pm project last night and they showed a supermarket that just had fennel and rhubarb. Yours was not too bad! Hope you are not long without choice. Here in Adelaide it's all good.

  2. I cant even post you spuds...they probably come the same way the trucks filled with fruit and vegies do.

At least you have the local growers to keep you healthy even if your choice may be a bit limited for a short while.

Must say even though I dont eat F and V as much as I should I like knowing that I can when I want.

The pictures actually look tempting-I must be feeling stressed or something...

  3. Sorry you were not able to get your fruit and veggie fix today. I hope the transportation systems get back into shape soon so that you can again enjoy your usual variety. I didn't realize how much damage to roads and rails could disrput things until after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans.

  4. We just don't realize how much we take for granted until it suddenly isn't available.

But yeah, fresh produce is the best!

  5. this is definitely something we take for granted here in the US. I have to say, our grocery shelves are always filled - too much, probably. I have a sinking feeling that much of the world does not have access to the bounty that we do - and I'm awfully glad yours will be temporary.

Thanks for keeping us updated on your region -

  6. I certainly hope things get better really soon. The flood is so bad...and yes I also do take it for granted to go and shop for what I like.

  7. I definitely take for granted the abundance of produce and food available to me. It's a great favourite. Here's hoping your lack of veggies & fruits is very temporary. And bless all those in Queensland.

  8. Hooray for fresh produce. Boo to floods.

Yes, I used to take it for granted to get these things at the store when I wanted them but the last couple of years, I've been consumed wtih the need to start providing more for myself instead of relying on others' and their schedule and prices.

I hope things sort out sooner rather than later over there.

  9. Oh no! I'm so glad you found some. Hope the flooding subsides soon and you're store is back to its bountiful produce selection soon!

  10. Makes you want to start a veggie patch, doesn't it? Although it probably wouldn't have done so well with all the rain!

  11. I just have to say I'm always a bit relieved these days when I see a post from you so I know you haven't been washed away! Wow! we really take some things for granted don't we. At least there's some fruit a veg still there.

  12. I hadn't thought about that side of the flooding. I know I don't appreciate enough how much food is in the stores.

  13. Thanks for your messages.
Wow I could use a bit of that lovely fresh stuff at the moment. We are very big fans of fresh fruit and vegies here too. Hope supplies will be back to normal soon. Great FTF!
    Cheers

  14. So true we take so much for granted until something happens and then we actually realize what we have. I am so glad you have enough food and are well xx

  15. Its just such a horrendous situation to be in. Hopefully it won't get any worse and you, your fruit and veggies and the swimming pool all get back to normal soon x

  16. I can't imagine what it would be like to go to the store and not find what you need. I was complaining about the fact that I paid over $2.00 for zuchinni the other day - at least I was able to purchase some!

Hope things get better for all of you soon.
