Help

Please help with any ideas on how I should quilt this.
I don't really want to do stippling or meandering.
I've been searching on Flickr and everywhere trying to find ideas.

I don't want to send it to be quilted, even though that would be the easy way out.
So if you have any suggestions, keeping in mind my level of ability, please help.
Is crap an official level of ability?

  1. I'm a big fan of using tracing paper to quilt a more complicated design. Just draw onto the paper, tape it on the quilt, stitch over, then tear off. Takes a bit of extra time but you can do some really cool quilting that might be a bit more difficult free-hand.

  2. How about straight lines either along the length or across the width, they could be slightly wonky or very straight and you could make them uneven in width. Or possible doing squares or rectangle shapes within each printed block, and then echo it into the middle until you run out of room (square upon square upon square). Although I think straight lines would look great in either a white or a light lavender or green colour. What are you doing for the back?

  3. What about tying it. my friend Dianne has done this with one of her quilts and it looks good. You can contact her at http://dinkydideequilts.blogspot.com/

  4. How about quilting crosses in the rectangles and squares,( the rectangles will have elongated crosses.)
Whatever you do Marg, it will be beautiful. x

  6. I was thinking in the ditch too - sometimes it's nice to keep the quilting understated and let the fabrics do the talking... but I also like the idea of knotting (or tufting) as I call it - gives it a real old fashioned charm - I like how it worked on my moda awesome quilt. I'm sure whatever you do it will be fab Marg x

  7. This is a beautiful quilt! I am a fan of straight line quilting - you could do long vertical and horizontal echo quilting along the white lines and where necessary through the colours. Another technique for a quilt with such a graphic pattern is random lines, just start at one side and head at any old angle to the other. Surprisingly it looks amazing. Or if you wanted to freemotion, I think a loopy stitch or a squared off meander (sort of like steps or tetrus shapes) woud also work.

  8. Hello Marg! How I laughed at your final question!

I was going to suggest that you quilt it with an all over sqirly design based on the cream swirly fabric I can see between the blocks...if you want to break loose and free machine quilt it! Otherwise, simply do as I nealr always did and stich in the ditch. I used to use an awful lot of invisible thread...it covers a multitude of sins!!!! Best wishes, Moira x

  9. O.K. here comes the german idea...I would do circles. Differentsizes of circles all over the quilt, not necessarily around the rectangles simpla all over the quilt - and I would do it by hand, since I am an aweful machinequilter.
And I love the quilt top - you will turn it to a beautiful quilt.

  10. Ooo Lots of good ideas!! I think stitch in the ditch and some crosses and some the square/rectangles inside each other. Or stitch in the ditch and then do perle cotton hand stitching in the squares. You're not allowed to say your quiltings crap, at least you're having a go! I've recently wimped out and taken 2 to be long arm quilted.

  11. After my FM efforts recently I can assure you that crap is an official level of ability. It lies just above "hopeless".

I think it should be simple quilting. You dont want anything detracting from those gorgeous fabrics and your amazing pattern.

Go forth and stitch in the ditch girl!

  12. Whatever you decided to do, just be careful to not stitch the kitty down to the quilt! I love this quilt. The colors are so beautiful and so are the fabrics. No matter what you do, it will be wonderful!

  15. I would do a fancy strait line quilting. In each of the blocks I would use a dissapering or water soluable marker to draw you lines. Quilt the tall rectangles with verticle lines and the long ones with horizontal lines. It will accent the blocks and look fancy but be really easy!
