Favourite Things Friday

As Friday rolls around again, I'm madly trying to catch up with my life. Today on more than one occasion I thought it was Tuesday.

As it's summer now and we are often sitting outdoors in the evening, I sometimes have to burn mosquito coils to keep the mosquitoes at bay.  We don't have many here but still I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I have a couple of these beautiful clay mosquito coil holders that I bought here on the Sunshine Coast, which are originally from Thailand.

They certainly look better than this.

I'm not sure which is worse, a bite from a mosquito and risking a number of mosquito born diseases or inhaling the toxic smoke from the mosquito coils. Fortunately we don't have to use them that often and we try to make sure the smoke is not wafting towards our faces. At least they look very pretty sitting on my verandah.

Hop on over to Mrs P's to check out all the other favourites this week.

Hope there's an enjoyable weekend ahead for everyone, and not too much stress in the lead up to Christmas.

  1. Oooo, I love those coil holders/hiders! They just make keeping mosquitos away so elegant. Not a worry for us right now mind, as I scraped the frost of the car this morning! Love your FTF!

  2. They are gorgeous Marg and very stylish unlike us who stick their mozzie coils in empty beer bottles!

  3. Beautiful and exotic! What a lovely accessory for your verandah no matter the purpose.

I am not familliar with mosquito coils although we do have mosquitoes here in the States. However, until the introduction of West Nile virus, DDT had wiped out those carrying diseases ~ a trend that seems to have continued despite DDT being outlawed for quite some time.

How interesting. What a cool favorite thing.

  4. Not much of a mossie problem here either, advantages of a "temperate" climate.

  8. You're lucky those mosquito coil holders didnt come home with me. I think they're beautiful.

Im pretty un-classy . When I use coils at all - I balance them on a tin can or something equally bogan.

    A very lovely favourite.

  9. I have never seen such snazzy holders for mossie coils. You dont need any of those mossie diseases...I suffered the results of Ross River Fever for 7 years, until it just "went", so I would not wish that on anyone.

we used to use old saucers. I shudder at the times when we had mosquito nets and mossie coils in the same area..the things we did "back when"

  11. I'm with Thea - I've never heard of them either..do they work? The mosquitoes (and we had tons this year because of all of our rain) love me. I think some people just have whatever it is that they love....and I've got it.

I love them, Marg...really gorgeous, and I can just picture them on your verandah! Enjoy the beautiful weather, I'm trying not to be jealous...just happy for you!

  13. Great idea. Those rotten little mozzies can certainly spoil your night just when it is so nice to sit outside.
    Cheers

  15. Really not looking forward to mosquito season - fortunately they don't really like the taste of me all that much but they're still terribly annoying.

  16. It is generally too cool in the evenings even in summer for mosquitos here, most times. But they do like me! I'd be looking for a pretty thing to hide the coil too if I had to use one a lot!

  18. Those are so pretty!! I'd forgotten all about mozzie coils! I used to burn heaps when I was younger. I figured it was like inscense and kept mozzies away. Thinking back, I'm not sure that was such a great idea indoors.

  19. Very classy coil holders. I don't think I've ever seen anything like that in the states. We certainly could have used something like that when we lived in Houston. I think Houston is like heaven for mosquitos or something, they all seem to live there.
