Bloggers Quilt Festival - Fall 2010

Amy from Amy's Creative Side is hosting the Bloggers Quilt Festival,  and this is the first time I've joined in. I have really enjoyed looking at the beautiful quilts that people have chosen for this festival, there are so many creative and amazing people in the world, and we are so lucky to be able to see their work.

This is the first quilt in which I used pre-cut strips, in fact it's the only quilt I've used pre-cut strips. I have a love hate relationship with jelly rolls. They always looks so inviting and beautiful until they are opened and then they slump into a mass of floppy strips.  I have a few more rolls in my stash, waiting to be used.
When I returned to quilting from a very long break, this was the first  roll I bought,  Japanese indigo fabric from my local quilt shop.  I separated the strips into two piles, indigo and cream/off white and indigo/multi coloured.

The indigo/off-white strips were used on the front and the muti coloured ones were incorporated in the pieced back.  I used a template from the book "East Quilts West" by Kumiko Sudo for the applique flowers.

This quilt  has been very frustrating to photograph as it changes colour in practically every shot, sometimes looking, grey often purple and occasionally indigo The reds can change from orange to a deep red. Thanks to my blog friends I persevered and finished it.  I learnt that basting is an essential part of quilting and you can never have enough pins ( I should have used more)  and I should have quilted each line from the alternate side to stop buckling and ripples. It's not perfect, but I'm very happy with it.

The back, the indigo/multi coloured strips were pieced into the middle strip.

Every quilt has to have the final stamp of approval.

  1. Marg, your quilt is lovely. I am glad to see one done from Jelly rolls. I love the look of them (Jelly Rolls ) and am often very tempted to buy them but then I don't know what to do with them.
About the back - as I'm new to quilting I'm unfamiliar with piecing the back too. I just used one big piece of material for mine.
I think it must be hard to do both and get them lined up straight. Is this something that the good quilters do?
    Cheers

  2. I just finished a quilt for my granddaughter using 1 1/2 inch strips in a jelly roll. I too, thought they were pretty and I had a couple of charm packs too--it was really a stretch to find some matching fabric to complete the quilt.

You're quilt is beautiful and even if you don't think its perfect, to me that is what makes quilts unique and wonderful. Thanks for sharing and keep on quilting! You've got a great eye for putting things together.

  9. I really like this! It could be very cute in Hawaiian prints with Hibiscus flowers too! I'm working on two small jelly roll quilts right now, and have been frustrated multiple times.

  15. It's really a beauty, Marg! I like that you separated out the multicolored strips and used them on the back. I have only made one jelly roll quilt too--but I skipped the applique on my project as ti already seemed busy enough! Thanks for sharing your quilt's story :)

  16. This is so pretty, Marg! I love how you quilted around the flowers in heavier thread. It really sets them off. Very well done!

I haven't made anything from jelly rolls yet, mostly because I'm a prewasher of fabric (and that would be a helluva mess), and secondly because I'm too cheap. Oh, and third, I have too many scraps that I've cut into strips already. You have done a wonderful thing putting them all together so well in this quilt!
